What Are Superfoods?

This is certainly a tricky question to provide a definitive answer to!
‘Superfoods’ is a real buzz-word, that gets bandied around all over the place nowadays.

A pretty good definition would be foods that are super nutrient-dense and provide a ton of great health benefits.  So much so that you don’t need a huge volume of them in your diet to really kickstart the healing process.

Another common factor among them all is the levels of ANTIOXIDANTS they contain – in the form of pigments, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, phytonutrients and all other kinds of natural compounds.

Superfoods produce disease-fighting effects in ALL bodily systems from cardiovascular to brain function, from healing your gut to protecting your liver, as well as hormone balance and supporting great skin health.  Not to mention their many cancer-fighting properties!

And one other common factor amongst them all, is that every one of them is PLANT-BASED.  Superfoods are truly wonderful, all-natural medicines.

So in no particular order – let’s take a look at the big 12 superfoods…

The Top 12 Most Awesome Superfoods

1  Turmeric

A true king of the superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, with nearly 7000 peer-reviewed scientific articles proving its effectiveness!

From killing cancer cells, to reducing pain, boosting brain health and prolonging lifespan, its healing benefits are simply jaw-dropping [1][2][3][4][5].

Turmeric features in my list of most powerful cancer-fighting remedies, for very good reason indeed.

2  Spirulina

Spirulina is now well-known in the superfoods world, but let’s not take it for granted!

It’s the super-healing blue-green algae which is able to detox heavy metals, tackle Candida overgrowth, boost immunity, reduce cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and risk of stroke.  To name just a few out of numerous health benefits [1].

3  Chlorella

Another algae which is super-high in protein and healthy unsaturated fats.  Like its superfood cousin spirulina, chlorella is an important detoxer of heavy metals.

It’s also rammed with chlorophyll, B-vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients so it has massive antioxidant properties. Even better, chlorella and spirulina are especially powerful when used together as combination superfoods [1][2][3].

4  Beetroot

Though a surprising contender, beetroot has many healing benefits and has a well-deserved place on this superfoods list!

Beet is crammed with antioxidant pigments such as betalains, flavonoids and carotenoids.  And also vitamins B9 (folate), A and C.

Beetroot produces anti-inflammatory effects that help heal disease in the major bodily systems, including the eye, gut, heart, blood vessels and brain [1][2].

And you can whip some gorgeous healing recipes – like a simple beetroot juice or beetroot fritters, bright pink beetroot hummus or moist chocolatey beetroot brownies.

5  Wheatgrass

Even in ancient Egypt, wheatgrass was valued for its healing properties, so it’s been in the superfoods family for a LONG time.

Thankfully wheatgrass is an edible grass which is gluten-free (yay!).  And contains lots of healing chlorophyll and other nutrients, including vitamins A, C, E, selenium, iron and electrolytes.

Wheatgrass is fab for all sorts, including oxygenating and alkalising the body, boosting circulation, digestion, immunity, improving eyesight and liver detoxification [5a][5b].

6  Matcha Green Tea

Matcha contains high levels of antioxidant called catechins, which help to reduce food cravings, body fat and stress levels.  They also lower the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes AND various cancers (including bladder, prostate, breast and bowel) [6a][6b][6c][6d].

In fact as a top dietary source of catechins, matcha may well be one of the best cancer-fighting remedies out there [6e].

7  Ashwagandha

An ancient Ayurvedic herb with adaptogenic effects – ashwagandha is able to calm stress levels that affect the adrenal glands, as well as balance thyroid hormones.

Ashwagandha is renowned for its immune and mood-boosting properties, its ability to lower stress, anxiety, blood sugar, cholesterol and cancer risk [7].
And it’s also one of the best herbs for brain fog.

8  Moringa

This small Asian tree is high in protein (including many essential amino acids), minerals, powerful antioxidants such as vitamin C, polyphenols and the natural anti-histamine quercetin.

Moringa has awesome health benefits and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for 4000 years.  Studies have shown it to be great for inflammation, digestion, aging, hormone balance, blood sugar levels, skin health, brain health and mood [8a][8b][8c][8d][8e][8f].

It’s so simple to make yourself a refreshing moringa tonic and really boost your antioxidant levels.

9  Cinnamon

Subtly sweet cinnamon, a staple ingredient in our spice racks, is a health-enhancing gem.  In fact a 2005 study actually ranked cinnamon as one of the top antioxidant spices in the world [9a].

And it’s one of the best natural sources of manganese!  Plus, it’s also an awesome natural sweetener which helps lower blood sugar, fight diabetes, combat free radical damage, as well as protect heart and brain health.

10  Flax seeds

Also known as linseeds, these diminutive seeds are the richest source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in the plant world.

Flaxseeds also contain a bunch of minerals (including selenium, magnesium, manganese and phosphorous), as well as B vitamins and fibre.  They’re good for the gut, skin and hair, cholesterol, weight loss and treating menopausal symptoms [10a][10b].

11  Blueberries

The dark colour of blueberries tells you straight away that they’re rich in antioxidant pigments called anthocyanins.  Their other super nutrients include resveratrol and gallic acid, as well as anti-inflammatory vitamins C and K.

Blueberries are age-fighting, brain-boosting, digestion and heart-supportive.  And surprise-surprise can also lower your risk of cancer.

12  Avocados

And holding up the bottom of this superfoods list like Atlas himself are eternally-delicious avocados.  I personally think the world would be a much less magical place if avocados didn’t exist, they are so damn tasty!

Avocados are a HEALTHY FATS powerhouse so are wonderful for brain-health and like all other superfoods are loaded with antioxidants.

Even if you can’t stand their taste and texture, you can easily whizz them into a mood-boosting smoothie or choccie mousse and just eat them unawares.

So that’s the list, and what an inspiring one it is!

Each of these superfoods is so full of antioxidants that even if you just started to include ONE of them in your diet, you’d be doing your body a huge favour.

And the beauty is, they’re all really easy to incorporate into simple meals, such as salads, smoothies and various drinks, so require minimal preparation.
