14 Powerful Natural Remedies For Cancer

natural remedies for cancer

Before we get into the nitty gritty of some of the best natural remedies for cancer out there, I need to make a very important point about healing.

Good clean nutrition is the true foundation of healing.  Just taking supplements, while continuing to eat pizza, burgers and doughnuts, is NOT going to work for you.  Sadly there is no ‘magic bullet’ for getting well.  True healing involves genuine life-style change and an all round healthy approach to what you eat and how you live.

“Real healing involves massive action” – Chris Wark

One pharmaceutical drug isn’t going to cure your illness and neither is one natural remedy or supplement, those things are small pieces of a much bigger healing picture.  But your body will heal itself if you support it with love and nourish it fully every day.

Anyway, speech over. Now to the juicy list of awesomeness…

Incorporate the following natural remedies for cancer into your new deliciously nutritious lifestyle and you could see some amazing healing starting to happen…

14 Natural Remedies For Cancer

1 Turmeric & Curcumin

There’s no doubt that curcumin (active compound of turmeric) is one of the most potent and well-studied natural remedies for cancer on the planet.  Just a search on PubMed alone, brings up over 4000 scientific studies of curcumin’s healing effects on different types of cancer [1a].

Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant [1], lowering inflammation, reducing cancer cell proliferation and metastasis, and increasing cancer apoptosis (death of cancer cells).  It can even enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy and reduce its harmful side effects [1b][1c].  So if you’re looking for an anti-cancer supplement curcumin should undoubtedly be in your arsenal!

  • Oral curcumin – when taking curcumin therapeutically, you want to ingest as much as you can throughout the day! You can buy fresh turmeric root for juicing, or organic turmeric powder (in capsules, or for sprinkling in/on any meals you can).  No studies have so far found an upper toxic dose for curcumin [1d].
  • The most-studied curcumin compound to date is Curcumin C3, which can be bought in the awesome supplement Bosmeric SR.  This supplement also contains black pepper (piperine), ginger and boswellia, which all work together and enhance curcumin’s effect. You can buy Bosmeric SR online here.

2 Vitamin D3

Along with curcumin, vitamin D3 is one of the most important anti-cancer supplements of all.  So many scientific studies have revealed that low levels of vitamin D3 are linked to higher levels of cancer.  Just a search on Pubmed database demonstrates hundreds of these studies for anyone who’s interested in doing their own research.

Two separate randomised clinical trials carried out by Lappe et al, in 2008 and 2017, both demonstrated that D3 supplementation significantly lowered cancer risk in postmenopausal women [2a][2b].  A German study in 2017 also revealed that colorectal cancer patients commonly had very low serum D3 levels and that those levels were associated with much poorer prognosis overall [2c].

Elsewhere D3 supplementation appears to trigger apoptosis (death) of cancer cells, through an increase in levels of the vitamin D-derived hormone 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3.  This was seen in a 2014 trial looking at the link between low vitamin D levels and cancer in obese patients [2d]. In terms of natural remedies for cancer, vitamin D3 is a non-negotiable.

  • Oral vitamin D3 – doses of 5000-10,000IU per day are good for eliminating vitamin D deficiency.  And it is absolutely worth monitoring your D3 blood levels to ensure they reach an optimal range, for example 40-80ng/ml.
  • Vitamin K2 has been shown to work synergistically with D3 within the body.  In fact there is quite a lot of scientific evidence that each vitamin mutually enhances the other’s metabolism and therapeutic effects [2e].  For this reason, many people supplement vitamins D3 and K2 together to get the maximum health benefits from each.

3 Vitamin C

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, has long been known as a powerful antioxidant and in more recent years much research has been carried out on its effects against cancer [3].  There is now some evidence that high-dose intravenous vitamin C can selectively kill certain types of cancer cells, for example in colorectal cancer [3a].

Vitamin C also supports cancer-patients who are receiving traditional chemo/radio-therapy treatments, by significantly reducing treatment side effects. A 2011 German study of breast cancer patients, showed that 7.5g intravenous Vitamin C given alongside anti-cancer drugs, greatly improved their levels of fatigue, nausea, insomnia, depression, inappetance and dizziness.  In fact the overall intensity of symptoms in the untreated control group, was nearly twice as high than in the vitamin C-treated group [3b].

Traditional cancer treatments produce huge amounts of free radicals and oxidative stress within cells, and vitamin C provides a big boost of antioxidants to mop up these damaging molecules and reduce their toxic effects.

Another awesome characteristic of vitamin C is that it is really well-tolerated by the body, with high doses producing no toxicity.  So it’s one of the gentlest natural remedies for cancer that you can take.

  • Oral vitamin C dose: One way to discern your own therapeutic dose of vitamin C is to take increasing oral doses (for example gram by gram), until you reach bowel tolerance (diarrhoea).  This is known as a vitamin C cleanse or flush.

Once you know your ‘bowel tolerance’ dose, you can reduce this amount by 20% to find your therapeutic dose.  My bowel tolerance dose for example was 5g, so I now take 4g vitamin C as a regular therapeutic amount.

“The sicker you are the more Vitamin C you absorb.”

However, the more vitamin C you need, particularly if you are chronically ill, the higher your bowel tolerance will be.  A very unwell person may be able to tolerate as much as 60-80g of vitamin C before developing bowel symptoms!

If you wish to do a Vitamin C Cleanse, you can read more detailed instructions here.

4 Quercetin

Quercetin is an anti-inflammatory flavanoid, with many anti-cancer benefits [4a][4b][4c].   It acts as a  powerful antioxidant, protecting against DNA damage and also blocks the action of histamine.  In its activity against cancer, it binds excess iron which can be a key mineral in the growth of certain cancers.

  • If you’re looking for food sources of quercetin, go for organic varieties of apples, black grapes, raspberries, cranberries, red onions, green tea and green leafy veg.
  • Enhance the activity of quercetin by taking it alongside the oral supplement Modified Citrus Pectin, which work synergistically together to have a more powerful effect on cancer cells.
  • Good quercetin supplements include Source Naturals, Megafood, Jarrow and Thorne Research.  A therapeutic anti-cancer dose would be 1000mg (1g) three times per day.

However, because of quercetin’s iron-binding effects, it’s important to NOT take supplementary quercetin if you are anaemic, otherwise it may be harder to raise your iron levels.

5 Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is an ancient therapeutic treatment, which contains more than 75 active compounds.  These include vitamins and minerals, amino acids and enzymes. Aloe contains an important plant substance called lignin (which is why it’s so super absorbable in the skin). And also mannose which has excellent immune-supporting properties.

Aloe reduces skin ageing, by protecting against sunburn and UV damage.  It has anti-fungal, anti-viral,anti-bacterial and anti-cancer effects.

Various studies have demonstrated aloe’s anti-cancer action, in which it’s been seen to reduce proliferation of tumour cells and induce cell death (apoptosis) [5].  This is partly due to a key polysaccharide called acemannan which stimulates the immune system to release anti-cancer compounds, interleukins, interferon and tumour-necrosis factor A [5c].

Another interesting benefit of aloe is that it can enhance the effect of chemotherapy drugs, when used alongside them during cancer treatment [5a].  And it’s even able to reduce the damaging side effects of treatments like radiotherapy.  In a 2016 study, aloe alleviated the symptoms of radiation-induced mucositis, just as effectively as the benzydamine mouthwash which is normally prescribed [5b].

  • Aloe vera gel oral dose – 1-8oz per day if healthy, or up to 24oz for a therapeutic dose.
  • You can source awesome aloe vera gel, such as the 100% pure Stockton Aloe at Aloe1.com.

6 Boswellia (Frankincense)

Boswellia is the tree from which frankincense is extracted and made into frankincense oil. Boswellia is another extremely powerful antioxidant, with significant anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer benefits, and very low or no side effects when tested in scientific studies [6a][6b][6c].

Interestingly, boswellia and curcumin are two natural remedies for cancer that work synergistically (ie, each enhances the healing effects of the other), and this makes them super-therapeutic when combined as a treatment.

  • Oral boswellia – as mentioned in 1 (above), there is a supplement called Bosmeric SR containing not only boswellia but also curcumin C3 compound, ginger and black pepper (piperine).  When all are taken together in one treatment, they become more effective in their action.
  • There are also other great combination supplements available, like Swanson’s Ultra Cox-2 Combo, which contain boswellia, curcumin AND quercetin.  You can buy Ultra Cox-2 Combo here on Amazon.

7 Moringa

Moringa oleifera is one of the most nutrient-dense plants on Earth, with a large number of nutraceutical properties and a wide array of health benefits [7].  In comparison to other nutritious foods, it has high levels of protein, vitamin A, iron, potassium, calcium and all the essential amino acids.

“Moringa has been found to reduce cancer cell proliferation and metastasis.”

In studies, moringa extracts have shown remarkable anti-cancer effects, especially the leaves and the bark of the plant [7a].  Moringa has been found to reduce cancer cell proliferation and metastasis, increase apoptosis and lower levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).  Moreover, it shows a greater toxicity towards cancer cells than for healthy cells, making it one of the best natural remedies for cancer [7b].

  • Oral moringa supplementation – On Amazon you’ll find organic moringa powder, which can easily be mixed into water, fresh veggie juice, smoothies and soups.

8 Beta-Glucan

Beta-glucan is an important polysaccharide found in the cell walls of various organisms, including yeast, barley, oats and mushrooms.  A huge amount of scientific research has been carried out on it and its immune-moduating effects.

These effects include boosting the immune system’s ability to fight various pathogens, lowering levels of inflammatory cytokines and attacking cancer cells.  It has also been shown to enhance the action of some anti-cancer drugs [8a].

  • A good starting dose for beta glucan is 1x 500mg per 50lbs bodyweight (with no more than 1500mg a day).  Beta-glucan supplements are available from a variety of sources, including oats, yeast and mushrooms.

9 Mushrooms

Mushrooms are another set of powerful immune-boosting foods and have been used as medicinal treatments for thousands of years in ancient cultures.  Again, one of the important compounds they contain is beta-glucan, and mushroom beta-glucans have been shown to have direct cytotoxicity against colon cancer [9a] [9b].

Many other studies also demonstrate the anti-cancer effects of different species of mushrooms on tumour cells.  These include action against throat cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer [9c][9d][9e].  It’s well worth browsing Pub-Med to research different mushroom species and the effects of each one, depending on your own health requirements.

  • Oral mushroom supplements – If you’re keen to try a multi-mushroom supplement, there are some especially awesome ones available, and it’s beneficial to try alternating between them to achieve full health benefit.  On Amazon you can buy:

‘Garden Of Life’ RM10, which contains 11 different mushroom species and a host of other immune-supportive nutrients, including folate, lycopene, L-theanine and selenium.

Or ‘Host Defence’ My Community Extract, with an amazing blend of 17 wild mushroom extracts.

Or for a good source of mushroom beta-glucans, ‘Mushroom Wisdom’ Maitake D Fraction. The maitake D-fraction component of this supplement has scientific trials supporting its marked apoptotic effect on cancer cells [9f].

10 Colloidal Silver

Colloidal silver is an awesome natural antiobiotic, with a broad spectrum of action against a whole range of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, as well as some fungal strains [10a].

In terms of natural remedies for cancer patients, it helps protect against secondary infections caused by pathogens and is useful as part of detoxification.  Interestingly, scientific studies have also shown that colloidal silver has a direct anti-tumour activity on cancer cells.  For example a 2010 study demonstrated that it had a cytotoxic action on breast cancer cells, inducing apoptosis [10b].

  • Using colloidal silver as a treatment – Colloidal silver can be used orally, topically, as a flush, a gargle or a mouthwash.  But bear in mind, as it’s very powerful, you only need to use a small amount in one day.  Because colloidal silver is a potent anti-microbial it’s really important to take probiotics alongside it when using it orally (in the same way as you would when taking any oral antiobiotics), to protect your gut microbiome.
  • Dr Axe recommends – 2-5 drops for topical treatments, 1 eyedropper taken orally for supporting the immune system, 5 drops in a neti-pot solution for a sinus rinse.  And never to use colloidal silver for more than 14 days straight.  You can read more on Dr Axe’s page here.

11 Proteolytic Enzymes

Plant-based proteolytic enzymes bromelain and papain have fantastic scientically proven anti-cancer effects.  Bromelain is a mix of protease enzymes found naturally in the pineapple.  It’s effects on cancer include immune-modulation, inducing apoptosis and reducing proliferation of cancer cells.  And it is also able to lower levels of inflammation and production of ROS within cells [11a][11b][11c].

Papain is a similar protease enzyme extracted from papaya, which has demonstrated anti-tumour effects in scientific trials.  Like bromelain, papain can inhibit the growth, migration and invasion of cancer cells in the body [11d][11e].

  • Proteolytic enzymes as an oral supplement – The best way to take proteolytic enzymes is at the beginning of the day on an empty stomach.  Remember if you’re taking these enzymes to treat cancer and chronic disease, you want to take them without food so they get absorbed straight from your stomach into your bloodstream.  If you take them with food, they will be used to break down the food and you’ll lose the therapeutic effect.

Good enzyme products to try are ‘Garden Of Life’ Wobenzym and Nature’s Aid Organic Superfood Complex.

12 Amla

In at number 12 on my list of natural remedies for cancer is amla (Emblica officinalis). Also known as Indian Gooseberry, amla is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods on the planet.  It’s healing benefits are slightly jaw-dropping and include pain relief, liver-protection, gut-protection, heart-protection and brain protection, to name just a few[12].  More recent studies have found it also has significant anti-cancer effects, as well as being anti-inflammatory, free-radical scavenging and radio/chemo-therapy supportive [12a][12b].

  • Oral amla – Amla is a very bitter food to eat, so is best taken in powder form so it can be stirred into other more tasty foods, or in capsule form.  Because amla is so effective, you only need start with a small dose of powder, for example a quarter teaspoon once a day.  A popular capsule supplement is ‘True Veda’ Organic Amla on Amazon.

13 Black Seed Oil

Black seed oil or black cumin oil (Nigella sativa), is known to contain over one hundred nutritional compounds including essential fatty acids, amino acids, minerals such as iron, potassium and calcium, beta carotene, and the potent antioxidant thymoquinone (TQ) [13].

“Black seed oil is one of the most effective natural remedies for cancer, because of its active compound thymoquinone.”

As with many of these natural remedies for cancer, black seed oil is a powerful immune booster and antioxidant.

In scientific studies it has demonstrated effects on cancer cells by inducing  apoptosis, as well as preventing proliferation and metastasis.  These include significant action against leukaemia, lung cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer as well as various others [13a][13b][13c][13d][13e][13f].

  • Oral black seed oil supplementation – Bear in mind with black seed oil, it tastes very strong and needs to be washed down with something to help with the flavour!
It can be taken in liquid form or as powdered seed sprinkled on foods.  On Amazon, Amazing Herbs makes a good cold-pressed black seed oil liquid supplement, as a source of thymoquinone and omega fatty acids.

14 Probiotics

Probiotics are SO important to health that no list of natural remedies for cancer would be complete without them.  If, as Hippocrates stated “all disease starts in the gut”, then keeping your gut as healthy and well-balanced is critical to your overall wellness.

It is estimated that your gut microbiome makes up at least 60% of your entire immune system, so the more nourished it is the better you can fight disease.  More importantly, if you are on medication to treat a heath condition, there’s a high chance it will be damaging your gut in some way.

Drugs such as antibiotics or chemotherapy for example, wreak havoc on the gut microbiome, and supplementary probiotics play a crucial role in supporting your gut health in those situations.

“Probiotics have repeatedly been shown to relieve radiation and chemotherapy-induced side effects.”

There are many scientific studies showing how administration of probiotics is supportive in cancer treatment.  A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in 2014, revealed that probiotics improved bowel symptoms and quality of life in colorectal cancer patients [15a].

Probiotics have also repeatedly been shown to relieve radiation and chemotherapy-induced side effects such as enteritis, mucositis and diarrhoea [15b][15c].

  • Choosing a probiotic supplement – There are so many probiotic supplements out there it can be pretty overwhelming trying to choose one.
As a general rule though a good starting point is to look for probiotics with multiple strains (a diverse gut is a healthy gut) and at least 50 billion strength (the more bacteria you take, the more will safely reach your intestine where they need to be).

Feel free to read my article The Best UK Probiotics Supplement, to find out which probiotics products I personally like and why.

  • However if you’re serious about probiotics, it’s really worth doing your own research into which different strains might be more beneficial to you, depending on what health condition you’re looking to treat.
You may need to try several probiotics before you find the right one for you.  Or you may want to alternate different products to keep your gut as diverse as possible.
Remember your microbiome is like a fingerprint and very much individual to you and your biology.

I hope you found some food-for-thought looking through these natural remedies for cancer.  It took some time to do the scientific research into each one, but totally worth it because so many of the results I found were pretty mind-blowing.

There really are some awesome natural cancer treatments out there!  Including other herbal treatments like artemisinin, galangal root and some pretty impressive anti-cancer teas.

If you have any personal experiences to share about any of them, or any thoughts or questions, please leave a comment below. x
