DIY Muscle Rub With Essential Oils

DIY muscle rub

Natural muscle rubs and ointments which contain essential oils, herbs and spices are wonderfully soothing ways to treat the body.  This particular DIY muscle rub is great for soothing tight, achy muscles and joints, and could also be rubbed gently into the temples for a topical headache treatment.

This is because the active compounds in peppermint, eucalyptus, cayenne, ginger and turmeric each have pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory action.  And the natural fats in the coconut oil, help to carry these compounds down into the lipid layer of your skin where they work their magic.

If you’d like to know more about the compounds in these ingredients and the science behind why they work, take a read of my article 6 Awesome Natural Pain Killers.

DIY Muscle Rub Recipe

The colour and texture of this DIY muscle rub will vary slightly depending on whether you use the powdered forms of some of the ingredients, and also whether you add turmeric or not.

It should end up being light to dark orange in colour, and may be slightly more grainy the more powder is added to the mix.

The muscle rub should keep well for at least several months, but remember to store it somewhere cool so the coconut oil doesn’t soften too much between uses.

100g / 1/2 cup coconut oil

4 tablespoons / 2 ounces / 1/4 cup beeswax

15 drops peppermint essential oil

15 drops eucalyptus essential oil

2 drops ginger essential oil OR 2 teaspoons ginger powder

2 teaspoons cayenne pepper powder

2 drops turmeric essential oil OR 2 teaspoons turmeric powder

Note: If you add turmeric to the ointment, be aware it can stain skin and clothes.

1  Place a saucepan containing 2 inches of water on a medium/low heat.

2  Add the coconut oil and beeswax to a jar, and place the jar in the saucepan.  Allow the contents to slowly melt and stir them together well.

3  Then add the cayenne powder, ginger powder and turmeric powder (if using). DO NOT add any of the essential oils at this stage.

4  Once fully melted and combined, remove the jar from the pan and allow the contents to cool slightly, then add your chosen essential oils.  Then mix thoroughly one last time before the mixture cools and sets.

Remember, if you wish to put the Rub in different tins or containers, then pour it into them while the mixture is runny enough to do so.
