Festive And Spicy Ginger Smoothie

If like me you have smoothies often, you probably get used to certain ingredients and flavour combinations and maybe fancy something a little different.

This spicy ginger smoothie has the festive winter season written all over it, because it’s full of Christmas spices like cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and cloves.  Comforting flavours reminiscent of mulled wine, hot toddys, christmas cake and gingerbread.  It’s rich and warming with added ginger, so a perfect breakfast smoothie for some of those colder days.

Although you probably won’t be drinking this smoothie for health reasons, it’s still good to know that these festive spices are really healing – containing loads of compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits [1].

And you are of course free to adapt the recipe, entirely as you see fit!  Swap the coconut milk for another delicious nut milk, such as almond, cashew or hazelnut.  Or alternatives like oat or rice milk if you prefer.

The recipe also has good natural sweetness, so you can leave out the dates if you’re worried about sugar levels in your foods.

Spicy Ginger Smoothie Recipe

Note: makes 2 servings of spicy ginger smoothie.

Ingredients

1 ripe banana

450ml / 2 cups coconut milk

2 Medjool dates

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon allspice

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

Method

1  Grab your blender and add all the ingredients.  Whizz together to form a smooth creamy mixture.

2  Tip into glasses and serve straight away, or refrigerate for later.  Also keeps great overnight, if you need breakfast-on-the-go.
