If you’re a woman, there’s a good chance this stuff makes you grimace and turn away every time you look in the mirror!

You long for smooth, firm skin on your behind, but instead there it is, catching the light like bumpy orange peel.  Cellulite.  Eughhhh.

You may well find yourself daydreaming about liposuction and surgical treatments to give you beautiful thighs, but the horrible truth is that many of these options are expensive, physically traumatic and often not even effective!  Merely redistributing fat to other areas of your body [1].

But don’t be disheartened, I’m going to run through some beautifully simple ways to get rid of cellulite naturally that aren’t expensive OR painful.  And what’s more will lead to all manner of health benefits for your entire body as a whole.

First though, let’s take a quick look at the basics…

What IS Cellulite Anyway?

So I guess apart from a lucky few, pretty much all of us women are familiar with that lumpy, dimpled skin around our bums and thighs, arms and tums.  We frequently struggle with how it looks and feels, and for many of us cellulite lowers our self confidence and self image.

But in a health sense, cellulite is actually pretty harmless stuff.  It’s basically just uneven deposits of fat under the skin, which can become increasingly more obvious as our skin loses its elasticity.

In the bigger picture though, looking at why you’ve developed cellulite in the first place, is key to understanding how to get rid of it.

So What’s The Cause Of Cellulite?

There are a number of biological and lifestyle factors which can make cellulite more likely to develop and stubbornly hang around:

  • Bad diet and low nutrient intake.
  • Being overweight / having too much body fat.
  • Lack of exercise and an inactive, sedentary lifestyle
  • Poor circulation and poor collagen structure in the skin.
  • Hormone changes.
  • Bloating and fluid retention.
  • High stress levels.

5 Ways To Get Rid Of Cellulite Naturally

So tackling these causes collectively is absolutely part of the solution.
In looking at ways to get rid of cellulite naturally, it’s crucial to make a number of lifestyle changes.  And we can do that by breaking these changes down into more manageable steps:

1  Eat Healthy

This may seem like a no-brainer but eating clean and healthy has to be part of your lifestyle, if you’re going to get rid of cellulite naturally and permanently!

Not only will you lose weight and reduce body fat, but you’ll simultaneously detox, rebalance hormones and boost your metabolism.  All of these effects together will bring about huge positive change in your body shape, skin health, energy levels and further motivation to stay fit and healthy.

And eating clean and healthy looks like this:

  • Cut out the sugar – There’s no getting away from this friends, sugar is BAD.
If you think it has no effect on your overall health, then you’re burying your head in the sand.  Excess sugar consumption leads to increased fat deposition.  As well as body-wide inflammation and fluid retention, amongst a whole bunch of other negative health effects.
  • Reduce refined carbohydrates, flour and grains – All of these foods convert into sugar in your body and get stored as fat in exactly the same way as sugar does.
  • Cut out trans and hydrogenated fats – These are fats such as ‘partially-hydrogenated vegetable oils’ in processed foods, that your body simple can’t digest properly.  They lead to more weight gain and systemic inflammation.
  • Get aware of possible food sensitivities/intolerances/allergies you may have – Science is showing that gluten is a health problem for way more people than just coeliacs.  And the same can be said of other animal proteins like casein.  These proteins are damaging to the gut lining, reducing nutrient absorption and skin health.  As well as leading to immune sensitivity and inflammation.
  • Increase your intake of fresh fruits & veggies – Bombard your body with all the phytonutrients and antioxidants of plant foods!  Think colourful, seasonal and organic where possible.  The more variety you eat, the more healing nutrients you ingest.
  • Hydrate with clean, fresh, filtered water – An essential part of keeping your body cleansed, flushed and detoxed.

2  Exercise, Exercise, Exercise!

Without a doubt, one of the most important ways to get rid of cellulite naturally is to get your body moving and burning fat!  You cannot expect to reduce your cellulite without it.

Use types of exercise like HIIT (high intensity interval training), which alternates short bursts of intense exercise with cool-down periods.  It’s been shown to put your body in a higher fat-burning state more effectively than hours and hours of relentless exercise.

You can also combine this with weight training and gentle muscle toning such as yoga or pilates, to lift and strengthen sagging muscles underlying your skin.

3  Increase Your Collagen Intake

The collagen in your skin, is the connective tissue that holds everything together and gives it good structure.  It’s responsible for your skin’s elasticity and it’s levels will fall as you age, or become more unhealthy.

As collagen levels fall, the skin loses its firmness and the risk of developing cellulite increases.  You can support your body’s collagen levels by:

  • Drinking bone broth – Bone broth contains high levels of collagen-building amino acids like proline and glycine.  As well as many other healing compounds and antioxidants.
  • Take a good quality collagen supplement – A number of recent scientific studies have shown that ingestion of collagen hydrolysate brings about improvements in skin softness, texture, moisture and elasticity [3][3a].
And there are now some great quality collagen supplements available to choose from, such as this awesome UK-made Collagen Hydrolysate by Edible Health or this one made by Great Lakes.

4  Try Supplements That Reduce Cellulite

There are a whole bunch of supplements that you can use to get rid of cellulite naturally, here are some of the best…

  • Healthy fats, eg EFAs (essential fatty acids) – This might seem counter-intuitive when you’re trying to lower your fat levels, but taking in more healthy fats really does promote the growth of healthy tissue and healthy skin.  They also have an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory effect on the body.
Choose super-quality fats, such as krill oil, coconut oil, EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) and MCT oil (medium-chain triglycerides).
  • Flaxseed – This diminutive seed is a true superfood.  It’s great for so many things including balancing oestrogen, boosting skin health, reducing appetite and increasing weight loss.  These are my favourite flaxseeds to chuck in a smoothie.
  • Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) – An interesting herb with many health benefits, gotu kola has also been found to have some fat-busting properties! [4c][4d].
Here’s the gotu kola supplement that I’m currently taking.
And you can read loads more about gotu kola in my other post – 7 Amazing Gotu Kola Benefits And Healing Effects.
  • Kelp – Kelp too has been shown to increase your body’s fat-burning ability, because it contains a compound called fucoxanthin [4e].

5  Nourish Your Skin With Essential Oil Treatments

And last but not least, certain essential oils, such as grapefruit oil, have been shown to have surprising effects on skin health and structure.  A 2010 study found that grapefruit oil bought about changes to fat deposition, by inhibiting the production of fat cells (adipocytes) within the skin layer [5].

You can of course, find many commercial creams containing grapefruit extract to try on your skin.  Like this one by Hristina Cosmetics.
Or you can make your own all-natural cellulite cream using a couple of simple ingredients!  Check out this recipe to get started – Natural Homemade Cellulite Treatment.
