Nourishing Coconut Oil Hair Treatment

coconut oil hair treatment

There’s little doubt that coconut oil is an antioxidant-rich food with a wide range of health benefits, ranging from anti-inflammatory to anti-microbial[1].  This makes it healing for a whole host of health problems and conditions, both internal and external.

When used as a hair treatment, coconut oil is primarily a great conditioner for dry, brittle hair.  This is because its chemical composition gives it a high affinity for hair proteins and means it can penetrate the hair shaft more easily than other oils [1a].  It’s also good as a natural control for head lice [1b][1b] and has proven anti-fungal benefits [1d].

When you make your own coconut oil hair treatment, you gain the simple hair-nourishing benefits of the coconut oil, but without all the added combination chemicals of commercial hair products.  Chemicals such as pthalates, triethanolamine (TEA), diethanolamin (DEA), BHA, PEG compounds, triclosan, fragrances and more.  One or more of these chemicals commonly occur in our hair and beauty products and can demonstrate carcogenic effect, or act as irritants, formaldehyde releasers, allergy triggers and endocrine disrupters.[1e][1f][1g][1h].

Take a look at the simple recipes below and find out if there’s a coconut oil hair treatment for you…

A Coconut Oil Hair Treatment For Every Problem

The beauty of the coconut oil hair treatment is it can be used to nourish hair in a variety of different conditions, just by combining it with a few other natural ingredients in varying proportions.

A Simple Conditioner

Virgin coconut oil applied on its own, is a wonderfully simple conditioner that helps to reduce protein loss in the hair shaft.

Depending on the length and thickness of your hair you may need as little as 1/4 teaspoon, to as much as 1/2 tablespoon.  Just warm it in your hands to soften it, then work it gently through your hair, paying particular attention to the ends.

You can leave it in for as long as you wish before washing out with a gentle shampoo.

For Dry And Damaged Hair

For more dry and damaged hair, you may want a more intensive treatment so here you can add in some restorative essential oils.

1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil

1/4 teaspoon jojoba oil

2 drops sandalwood essential oil

2 drops geranium essential oil

1  Gently warm the coconut oil just enough to soften it and mix in the essential oils before applying to your hair.

2  Comb the treatment through and either leave in for a couple of hours, or overnight for a more intensive treatment.

3  When ready rinse out using a gentle shampoo and style your hair as usual.

For Thinning Hair

Both rosemary and lavender essential oils have wonderful hair-growth promoting properties (which you can read much more about in my other recipe – Rosemary And Lavender Olive Oil Hair Treatment).

1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil

2 drops lavender essential oil

2 drops rosemary essential oil

1  Carefully warm the coconut oil just enough to soften it and mix in the essential oils.

2  Apply to your hair and scalp, by massaging in and combing through gently.

3  Leave for 20-30 minutes to penetrate in and then rinse out with a gentle shampoo.

4  Repeat several times a week for best effect.

For Itchy, Greasy Hair And Dandruff

In scientific studies, both tea tree and lemongrass oils have been shown to be scalp-soothing and have excellent anti-dandruff activity at concentrations of about 5-10% [2a][2b].

You may want to experiment a little with the proportions of these essential oils to get the best effect for your hair.

1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil

5 drops lemongrass essential oil

5 drops tea tree essential oil

1  Gently warm the coconut oil enough to soften it, then mix in the essential oils, and enjoy massaging into your hair and scalp.

2  Leave on for 30 minutes to allow the oils to warm up and penetrate in.

3  Rinse out with a gentle shampoo.

4  Repeat at least several times a week to soothe the condition.
