The Best UK Probiotics | As Tested By Me

best UK probiotics

Post Updated – 15th May 2018

So as promised, I wanted to add another update on which probiotics I’m currently using this spring (2018). And whether my current choice for best UK probiotics supplement has changed or not.

Cos I like to keep you guys in the loop!

Personally, I think probiotics are one of the most important supplements you can take and an essential part of staying healthy.  But as there are now SO many products available, it can be a real mindfield trying to choose a good one.

I totally get that!  So that’s where I want to help out a little.

Why Are Probiotics So Important?

In today’s world, our bodies are constantly undergoing a barrage of things that damage our microbiome (the friendly bacteria in our digestive system).

Factors like over-work, high stress levels, over-sugared and highly-processed foods.  Drugs such as antibiotics and painkillers.  Exposure to a vast array of chemicals including environmental toxins, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), artificial fragrances, pesticides, industrial pollution, heavy metals and plastics.

The list goes on and on, and our bodies are truly overwhelmed by it all.  Over time all of these factors wreak havoc on our microbiome and our populations of good bacteria really suffer.

What’s scary is that our microbiome constitutes about 70% of our entire immune system!  It’s so critical to our overall health, that once our microbiome’s damaged our bodies begin to succumb to allergies, chronic diseases and autoimmune conditions.

So high quality probiotics are just one little weapon in the arsenal against this very big problem.  They give us a means of boosting our depleted gut bacteria, helping to repair our gut lining and keeping our immune system healthy.

And yet at the moment, when we visit the doctor, we get little or no information about probiotics or any recommendation to even take them!  And that leaves us hugely in the dark about their benefits and where to begin choosing a supplement.

That’s why we need to do our own research, get proactive in our own health and start making well-informed choices.

So with that in mind, here’s my little guide to what 3 main factors make a good probiotic, based on current research.  From that I’ll share which products I personally use at the moment and recommend as the best UK probiotics.

The Factors that Make The Best UK Probiotics

1. Number of different bacterial strains

A healthy microbiome contains many, many hundreds of different strains of good bacteria.  And each individual strain makes their own contribution to the healthy functioning of your body.

Studies are demonstrating that the more diverse your species of gut bacteria, the healthier you become.  So this means the more bacterial strains that are in your probiotic, the more benefit you are likely to get from it.  [1][2][3][4][5][6]

Interestingly many probiotics contain only about 1-3 strains (ie very few), so it’s best to spend a little time checking the label before you buy!

A good probiotic product can contain as many as 10 or more different strains of bacteria.  And what’s more, all of these strains should be listed on the label.
This allows you to see what the strains are and do some research into their benefits if you want to.

2.  Number of live cultures

This is the CFU number on the bottle of probiotics and it stands for Colony Forming Units.  It refers to the number of bacteria in each capsule and is usually in the billions.  Once again the higher the CFU, the more bacteria are present.

Because probiotics are live cultures, it’s unavoidable that some bacteria will die over time or be destroyed by digestive juices.  So the probiotics with a higher CFU will have a bigger bacterial population and a much better chance of reaching your intestine where they need to be.

The best UK probiotics will have at a CFU total of at least 50 billion, so always check for this on the supplement label.

3.  Protective capsule

Another important factor which many people don’t understand, is that the bacteria in probiotics are mainly intended to populate your small and large intestine.

And in order to get there, these probiotics have to pass safely through the extremely acidic environment of the stomach, without being destroyed in the process.

To combat this, a good manufacturer will have packaged their probiotic powder inside a quality capsule.  This capsule provides protection to the probiotics while in transit and increases their viability.

Without a protective capsule, the effectiveness of the probiotics is likely to be reduced.

This is one of the reasons why I never recommend probiotic drinks as a way of boosting gut bacteria.  These bacteria are unprotected and much more likely to be destroyed by your stomach acid.

Probiotic drinks are also often high in sugar and additives which will only harm the health of your gut, all the time you are trying to repair it!  So they’re definitely worth avoiding!

The Best UK Probiotics Supplements: 2018

Based on these key factors, my current two recommendations for the best UK probiotics supplements are Physis Advanced Probiotics XL and NutriZing’s Multistrain Probiotics.

best UK probiotics

Having used all sorts of probiotics in the past, I have experience of various other brands and have a better sense of what’s been effective and what hasn’t.

What I find at the moment, is I tend to alternate between these two products, which is known as pulsing supplements.  It means I can get the benefit and diversity of all the strains without spending a fortune.

And this is a good thing, as I can’t afford to be on both at the same time!

Physis Advanced Probiotics have been my long-standing best UK probiotics product for the last 3 years and that’s for a number of different reasons:

  • 10 different strains of bacteria – much more diverse than many of the other brands. The strains are: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus lactis, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus salivarius, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve and Bifidobacterium longum.
  • High strength – 50 billion CFU
  • Protective capsule – a capsule made from a combination of pectin and alginate, which protects the bacteria from harmful stomach acid.
  • Gluten free – no nasty gluten anywhere in this product, hurrah!
  • Vegetarian/Vegan friendly – the capsule contains zero gelatin, so is fine for veges and vegans.
  • Excellent value – Physis now sell an XL 90-capsules bottle, which makes them even more economical.
  • Great for your gut– They improve bowel regularity, ease constipation, bloating, gas and IBS,.  They also ramp up your immune system and fight off Candida overgrowth. And they’re specially good for replenishing your microbiome after a course of antibiotics!
  • Great customer service – Physis are so friendly and helpful! And that counts for a lot these days.
  • Made in the UK – AT LAST a good probiotic that is made in the UK and therefore doesn’t take weeks to arrive or have expensive shipping!
Plus it’s great to support a local manufacturer.
  • 100% money back guarantee – Physis will give you ALL your money back if you’re not happy with the product or the results you get from it.

As I said, I’ve stayed with Physis probiotics for this long because I’ve been so happy with the results.  I’ve been going to the loo like clockwork, once or twice a day, and almost never have digestive problems such as bloating, wind or constipation.

I’ve also never suffered any side effects (eg diarrhoea) which is sometimes a concern with higher strength capsules.  Or if your gut health is poor and if you’re not used to taking them.

BEST UK PROBIOTICS UPDATE: As of August 2017 I also started trialing a new UK probiotic by NutriZing because it contains 16 strains of bacteria – an additional 6 bacterial species!  That’s an almost 50% increase in species diversity.

I was really excited and interested to see whether I noticed any benefits from the increased diversity or health effects from the new strains!

The six extra NutriZing strains are Bifidobacterium infantis, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus reuteriLactobacillus helveticusLactobacillus fermentum and Streptococcus thermophilus.

And for all those of you who like to see a little more info, the health benefits of all 16 strains are shown below:

So that’s where I am, currently pulsing between NutriZing’s Multistrain and Physis Probiotics, to give myself a good mix.  And I would absolutely hats-off recommend them as the two best UK probiotics that I have used to date.

However, I’m ALWAYS following the latest research and adjusting what I take accordingly.  And I absolutely will change products if I find one that’s better, so WATCH THIS SPACE for updates!

If you’re still unsure and wish to find out more about either of them – Physis Advanced Probiotics (90 Capsules) or NutriZing’s Multistrain (60 Capsules) – or take a look at other customer reviews, you can do so on Amazon UK.

And if you do try them, please let me know how you get on, I’d love to hear your experiences!  This is just as true if you don’t think they’re the best UK probiotics supplements and prefer a different product instead – it’s all a learning process!

In the meantime, if you’re keen to really boost your all-round gut health, you can also get going with making your own super-healing fermented foods.

And alongside probiotics, foods like kefir and sauerkraut are an ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC long-term way of diversifying your microbiome and getting healthy.
I can’t recommend them enough as part of a healthy lifestyle!

Happy gut healing folks x

Thanks for the great website and your thorough research and suggestions – invaluable! Just a thought; you give the link to ‘amazon’ for the Physis probiotics, why not their own website? More cost effective, and knowing how companies are treated by amazon I find it’s always good to go direct.

Hi Dale, I guess it’s just a reflection of how I tend to buy supplements myself.
I think people like to be able to read product reviews and choose other products if they see something they prefer or that’s more suitable for them.
But you’re right, Amazon IS a monster company and there’s great value in supporting local businesses directly, especially if the price is more economical! So thankyou for sharing their link and for your thoughts too 🙂
